The most dangerous phrase in any field is: "I didn't need that tool to get here."

I've watched senior engineers — people I respect, people with real depth — refuse to touch AI coding assistants. Not because they evaluated the tool and found it lacking. Because something deeper was happening. Something the tool had nothing to do with.

They were protecting their identity.

The Identity Stack

When you spend a decade mastering something difficult, that mastery becomes load-bearing. It holds up your self-concept. "I'm the person who can solve hard problems." The tool works. That's settled. What's unsettled is what it means for your identity if you admit it.

Here's the reframe: AI doesn't replace expertise — it amplifies the gap between experts and everyone else. A senior engineer who uses AI well doesn't become average. They become superhuman. The craft is now in knowing what to build, why to build it, and how to evaluate what the AI produces. That's actually harder than typing the implementation yourself. It requires deeper understanding, not shallower.

But you have to let go of the idea that the typing was the point.

Every major shift in military doctrine — from cavalry to artillery, from trench warfare to air power, from conventional to asymmetric — was resisted by soldiers whose identity was fused with the old method. What Growth Mindset Actually Means

Growth mindset, in practice, means one specific thing: your identity is not tied to your current level of ability.

That's it. That's the whole thing.

If your identity is "I'm someone who writes great code," AI threatening that is existential. If your identity is "I'm someone who solves hard problems and delivers real value," then AI is a force multiplier and you're already reaching for it.

The engineers I've watched thrive over the last two years aren't the ones with the most raw skill. They're the ones who can separate what they do from who they are. They can pick up a new tool without feeling like the old tool was them.

The Real Threat

The threat isn't job loss. Companies aren't replacing engineers with AI — they're reducing the need for mediocre engineers while increasing the leverage of great ones. That's always been how technology works.

The real threat is to the comfortable mediocrity that expertise enables. It's easier to be a senior engineer who does things the old way and produces consistent output than to be a senior engineer who constantly re-evaluates their methods. AI breaks that comfort. And for some people, that comfort was the whole point.

If you find yourself arguing against AI tools more than you're experimenting with them, ask yourself one honest question: are you protecting your craft, or protecting your ego?

Because those are different things. And the answer matters.


The engineers who will be irreplaceable in five years aren't the ones who refused the tool. They're the ones who mastered it so thoroughly that they can do what the tool can't — and use the tool to get there faster.
